Outdoor Table Tennis
Many people have fond memories of playing table tennis. This whimsical game can be found in almost any school, camp, rec center, and even quite a few private homes. It is a fun sport that almost anyone can play and doesn't require a great deal of effort or stress. It is usually played indoors (it's just easier to chase after the balls inside), however, when the weather heats up, and you are itching to be outside, table tennis can stand up to the job. There are a few provisions you will have to make for outdoor table tennis, however it is worth it!
The biggest consideration you should have when playing table tennis outdoors is the weather and the elements. When you purchase your table, make sure that it is approved for both indoor and outdoor use. This type of table should be water proof and rust proof so that it wont be damaged in case of rain or other precipitation. The tables usually come with wheels and are collapsible. This type is easy to assemble and disassemble, so you may want to store it indoors when its not in use.
Once you have found a water proof table, you should make sure that it is a quality surface. Different types of coatings will effect how the ball bounces. Metal tables will cause the balls to bounce slower than wood tables. Chances are you will only notice this difference if you are an avid and serious table tennis player.
When you move the table outside, try to place it on an even surface such as concrete. If you place it on grass, it may affect the play. You dont want any of your players complaining that the game isnt fair because of the ground surface.
While the standard table is nine feet by five feet, this is not necessary for amateur games. What is important, is that the net is placed in the middle of the table. You will follow the same rules, regardless of the actual size of the court.
Table tennis can be such an enjoyable sport. If you make sure you have the right equipment, the game can be played inside or outside. Just make sure if you play outside, you buy plenty of extra balls. While the indoors is a controlled environment, the outdoors is not. There is no telling where the balls may be flying off to. Best to have some extra so you can continue your game.
